Artist Without Inspiration

I recently attended Ex-pose, an exibition at the Laguna Art Museum centered around the work of contemporary sculptor and painter Allison Schulnik. What struck me the most about Schulnik’s work was the elaborate detail and time taken to each piece. Her paintings are done with heavy coats of paint- the curator at the front desk told me Schulnik does it one layer at a time and let’s it dry. Having worked with the long dry times of oil before, I can understand that this process would be incredibly painstaking and time consuming. When you walk into the gallery, the smell of oils hits you like a cargo train and every painting has paint layered several inches thick on massive canvases. Just WOW.  View Larger

A lovely music video from Grizzly Bear and work of incredible detail by artist Allison Schulnik. This animation must have taken more than a great deal of patience.

Pretty incredible installation in scale alone. Sure all of you Nor Cal kids are well aware of the Bay Light’s existence. Project was done on commission by artist Leo Villareal for the 75th anniversary of the bridge’s opening.

Incredible series (After the Flood) done by Robert Polidori about New Orleans post-hurricane. The imagry is stunning and powerful. This is my favorite image, but the whole thing is worth a look.  View Larger

Even though this was a promotional move by the History Channel, this works. From the “Know Where You Stand” series by Seth Taras, Normandy Beach.  View Larger

RED cameras just seem to have some epic quality. The light in this is fantastic. Some of the camera work was done by a UCSD grad.
